this morning i did an experiment.
i love oatmeal - it's so easy for breakfast during the week...and if i'm running late i can bring a packet with me.
but there's so much sugar in most brands of oatmeal.
so this morning i decided to try out mccann's steel cut irish oatmeal:
wow. all i can say is...wow.
this stuff is good.
completely different from regular oatmeal - with a yummy nutty flavor that is to die for. i added a bit of light vegetable oil spread and some cinnamon and it was just perfect.
why steel cut? well, it's not processed like regular oatmeal is...just chopped up a bit, so it has many more nutrients. it's high in b-vitamins, protein, calcium, and fiber, but low in salt and unsaturated fats. one serving is 150 calories and really sticks with you! i'm completely satisfied!
the only drawback i see is the length of time required for preparation...i had to cook them on the stove for 30 minutes. now, during the week when i have to go to work, this just won't do. i found some websites with some ideas on how to speed up the process - one of them suggests that you soak the oats in water overnight and then cook on the stove. this way, it only takes 5-10 minutes to cook. that i can handle!
